How to film a rolling shot: frame rate, shutter, and the gimbal
A rolling shot on stills and a rolling shot on video are the same maneuver and almost none of the same decisions. The stills version forgives you: fire two hundred frames down a straight and three will be sharp where you want them sharp. Video gives you no such lottery. Every frame of a twelve-second clip has to hold, which means the settings get locked before the cars move and stay locked until the pass is over.
We shoot this every week — chase car, lead car, a road we have already driven twice that morning. Here is the actual order of decisions, the math behind each one, and the parts that only show up after you have done it badly a few times. Start with the pair: frame rate and shutter speed
Pick these two together, before lens, before aperture, before you think about the car at all.
The convention is the 180-degree shutter angle: expose for half the duration of each frame. At 24fps that is 1/48 of a second. At 30fps it is 1/60, at 60fps it is 1/120. StudioBinder's explainer on the 180-degree rule lays out the arithmetic if you want the derivation — shutter angle equals frame rate times 360 divided by shutter speed, which is how 24fps at 1/48 lands exactly on 180.
What the rule buys you on a car is the wheel. At 1/48 and something like 35 mph, the spokes smear into the rim and the car reads as moving even in a still pulled off the timeline. Go to 1/500 to be safe and you get a car that looks parked on a road that happens to be sliding past. That single mistake ruins more automotive footage than any other.
Our default is 24fps at 1/48 for the hero pass, and a 60fps pass at 1/120 held in reserve for anything we might want at 40 percent in the edit. Two frame rates, two shutter speeds, and we do not mix them inside a sequence.
There is a real argument that 180 is a convention rather than physics. Iain Anderson makes the case in a piece on ProVideo Coalition that exposure time should track how fast the subject is actually moving, not what frame rate you happened to dial in. He is right, and it is worth understanding why it does not change the answer here: in a car-to-car pass the subject is nearly static relative to you. The car sits still in the frame and the background is what rips. The blur lands on the guardrail and the asphalt, where you want it, and not on the bodywork.
ND filters, because San Diego is bright
Once shutter is locked at 1/48, you have exactly one exposure control left that does not cost you image quality, and it is not aperture.
Midday on the coast is roughly a sunny-16 situation: f/16 at ISO 100 gets a correct exposure at about 1/100. You need 1/48, and you want to be at f/4 or f/5.6 so the car separates from the background. That is five or six stops of light you have to throw away. Each stop of neutral density halves the light reaching the sensor, so a six-stop ND is not a stylistic choice. It is the only way the shot exists.
The working order:
- Lock shutter to 1/48, or 1/120 if you are on the 60fps pass.
- Set ISO to the camera's lower native value and leave it there.
- Choose aperture for the look. f/4 to f/5.6 keeps the whole car sharp as it travels through frame; f/2.8 if you want the background to go to soup.
- Dial ND until the exposure is correct. Variable NDs are fine for run-and-gun. Fixed NDs are cleaner if you can afford the stop to swap them.
Golden hour changes the numbers and not the order. Late light on the Torrey Pines grade usually puts us around three stops instead of six, and the cars pick up a warmth that no grade fakes convincingly. Mounting the camera: arm, gimbal, or a body out the window
Three options, in descending order of stability and ascending order of how much the footage feels like someone made it.
Suction-cup arm on the chase car. Most stable, least flexible. Bolt it to the hatch or the rear quarter, frame it once, and every pass is identical. Good for the establishing shot you will cut to twice. Bad for anything where you want the frame to breathe.
Three-axis gimbal, operator braced in the back. Where most of our usable footage comes from. The gimbal eats chassis vibration and road texture; the operator supplies the intent. Run it in a mode that lets you pan freely while it holds tilt and roll, so you can follow the car through a corner without the horizon rolling with you.
Hand-held, window down, elbows on the door. Sometimes it is the best shot. The micro-movement reads as human in a way a gimbal's glassy float does not. Reserve it for the pass where the car pulls away and you let it go.
One thing that rarely makes it into tutorials: at 35 mph with a window down, wind buffeting will find the resonant frequency of your lens hood and put a low-amplitude shake into the footage that you will not see on the camera's screen and will absolutely see on a 65-inch panel. Tape the hood or take it off.
The three passes
We shoot the same road three times, and the third one is almost always the keeper.
Pass one, the safe one. Chase car behind and slightly offset, subject filling the right two-thirds of frame, speeds matched at 30 to 35. Nobody is being clever. This pass exists so that if the light goes or the road closes, we still have a sequence.
Pass two, the geometry. Now we move. Drop back and let the car pull away, then close. Swing from three-quarter rear to profile as the road bends. Get the front three-quarter by letting the lead car overtake. This is where you find out whether the two drivers are actually reading each other.
Pass three, the one we use. By now both drivers know the road, the corner, and each other's braking points. The speeds settle. The gaps get tight enough to be interesting and stay predictable enough to be safe. Nearly everything in the Rollers section of the portfolio came off a third pass.
Between passes, watch the footage. Not the histogram — the footage, full screen, at speed. Vibration and focus hunting are invisible on a two-inch monitor and obvious everywhere else.
The part that is not about cameras
Two cars moving in formation at 35 mph on a public road, one of them with a person leaning out of it, is something you do with radios and a briefed plan or you do not do at all.
- Both drivers on comms for every pass. Hand signals are not a system.
- Agree the speed and the abort word before the first pass. Abort means both cars settle and separate, no discussion.
- The chase car's driver drives. They do not look at the camera, the monitor, or the subject car.
- Nobody's body goes outside the window line without a harness, and the harness gets checked by the other person.
- Choose roads with sightlines and shoulders. The pretty canyon with the blind crest is not worth it, and the footage off it does not look better anyway.
Permits, insurance, and a closed road change what is possible. That is a different conversation and usually a different budget, and it is most of what we discuss when a manufacturer calls about videography.
Grading, briefly
Shoot log, expose a touch to the right, and do your correction before your look. The order of operations we use on stills carries over almost directly — the Lightroom color grading workflow covers it, and the logic is identical in Resolve: neutralize, set contrast, then push the palette. Automotive paint is the hardest thing in the frame to get right. Grade to the paint and let the sky fall where it falls.
Resist the temptation to fix a bad shutter choice in post. Motion blur added after the fact looks like motion blur added after the fact, and frame-blended slow motion from 24fps footage will smear the badge on the decklid into a suggestion. Shoot the 60fps pass instead. It costs one lap.
