Palomar at dawn: a field guide

South Grade before 7am is the best road in San Diego county. 21 miles, 363 curves, and if you time it right, a cloud inversion that turns the valley into an ocean.

Timing

Gates of light: 5:40–6:20 in summer. The marine layer burns off by 8. After that you're shooting in a lightbox with no diffusion.

Etiquette

Locals ride this road daily. Hold your line, wave the bikes past, never cross double yellow for a frame. No shot is worth a headline.
